Summary: Collection consists of federal, New York state, and New York City municipal directives, manuals, and pamphlets concerning civilian defense and domestic measures for protection and safety in times of war. Most of the materials concern civil defense in World War II. The collection's documents from the 1960s primarily involve preparation for nuclear war, but also include a 1960 F.B.I. release by Director J. Edgar Hoover to law enforcement officials warning against Communist threats. Most of the federal materials were published by the U.S. Office of Civilian Defense.
